OGBL Power Rankings Fall 2007

Whilst not that many games have yet been played (and indeed many coaches have not begun the season yet!) it is important to give the overall picture of what is going on in the league. Now this is a "power ranking" table, not a league table. Its just for pride. It allows coaches playing in the "Open League" to compare how their teams are doing versus the competition. The trophies will be fought for in a play off style affair periodically, with each coach eligible to enter one of their teams.

For these power rankings the following scoring system has been used.

Win = 15

Tie = 10

Loss = 5

TDF = 1

TDA = -1

Tie breaker = CAS +/-

Absolute points in an open league is not a fair reflection of a teams relative success so all points are divided by the number of games a team has played to give a points average. This way a team which has played 40 games could be compared with a team that played 10 for example.

We will be recording as many interesting stats as I can pursuade people to write down so expect team gate averages and team weather averages and so on.

Athelorn Falcons 2 - 2 Soft Green Felt

This game was dominated by the rivalry between the fans of these two teams. Clearly the Wood Elves (Soft Green Felt) had a score to settle with their High Elf (Athelorn Falcons) cousins who abandoned them in the Old World. At the opening kick off the Falcons Coach, the Notorious_JTB, was left with his offense in tatters after a pitch invasion left six High Elves face down in the mud whilst leaving the Wood Elves untouched! This handed the initiative to Soft Green Felt, who had managed to kick into the Falcons endzone, and they quickly moved their players forward to pin the High Elves deep in their own half. The Falcons tried to form a cage around the ball several times and each time a wardancer or line elf(!!!) would get inside and sack the ball carrier unassisted. Each sack left the former ball carrier face down in the mud and Anandar was unlikely sidelined for the next game after landing badly. The ball would not bounce for the Felt though and they could not take advantage of their pressure on the ball. The Falcons managed to work the ball to Ethilandar by the end of the half and he dashed in to give the High Elves the lead. On the last play of the half the Wood Elves launched a despicable gang foul on Ethilanel. The low blow by #14 knocked Ethilanel out cold and he failed to return for the rest of the game.
The High Elf fans exacted some measure of revenge at the start of the second half by stunning a Wood Elf with a rock. Inspired by this Glorandar too revenge on #14 for the dirty play at the end of the first half and killed him with a single blow! This slowed the Felt's drive but could not prevent them scoring mid way through the half. The Wood Elf fans chose this time to launch a riot, possibly in celebration or possibly in a cynical attempt to gain more time, who can tell. Either way it could not prevent the Falcons scoring again through Ethilandar. It also resulted in the statistical anomaly of the same player being knocked out in the same turn twice! The extra time would prove crucial in deciding the outcome of the game. After a high kick off the Felt's were able to sweep up field and equalise as time was about to run out. Not before they knocked out Conimnor with another dirty foul. The #15 line elf was sent off for his efforts, possibly to prevent him suffering the same retribution as #14!
Both sides made the prudent move of adding an apothecary to their staff after the game. Additionally both teams gained useful improvements, the Green Felt doing particularly well with their stat increase and a double.

Da Avalanche 2 - 0 Kiss My Flanks

The juggernaut that is the Notorious_JTB's orc team (Da Avalanche) crushed another foe beneath a freezing pile of snow on Saturday afternoon. Dwarfrunner's Chaos Dwarves (Kiss My Flanks) were powerless to resist as their offence froze! Despite recieving the Chaos Dwarves conceded the first touchdown midway through the first half to a solid Gothmog effort off a Grishnak pass. The next Flank's drive was thwarted by a perfect defence, which almost set up a second Avalanche touchdown. One bright point of the first half was when #14 Hobgoblin pushed Karggoz "Da Mighty" into the crowd with a bit of help from his Bull Centaur mate. The crowd inflicted a potentially niggling injury on the Black Orc, but the skills of the apothecary were sufficient to allow Karggoz to live up to his name and return for the second half.
The second half saw Da Avalanche received the kick off and set up to roll down the field. Grishnak "halfling hammer" took revenge on #14 and left him with a limp which will never heal as payback for that incautious first half push. The Orcs attempt to control the ball for eight turns solid, were thwarted however an incredibly dodging bull centaur who was able to sack of Bargoz. This was the game highlight for the Chaos Dwarves however, as Da Avalanche quickly regrouped. The Orcs were able fight off all the remaining Flankers to score again through Gothmog, assisted ably the other three blitzers.
After the match the Orcs still dominated with the winnings being even more uneven than the game! Da Avalanche recruited a goblin (Nailz) and Gothmog inspired by his two touchdown effort and being awarded the MVP got just a bit faster.

Da Avalanche 2 - 1 Ludovico Lizards

This evenings game between Anthony_Times' Lizardmen (Ludovico Lizards) and the Notorious_jtb's Orcs (Da Avalanche) was a close affair. The Orcs inducements, "That babe's got talent" and Ugroth Bolgrot (chainsaw fool) were instrumental in Da Avalanche's domination of the first half. The Lizards were down to seven players by the time Da Avalanche scored their first TD through Gothmog just before half time. However, the Lizards Ko'd players came back to even up the numbers for the second half.
The Ludovico Lizards responded quickly and turn 10 was crucial. Gothmog was Ko'd, Karggoz was badly hurt after being pushed into the crowd by Alex koxigor, and Bog ran in the equaliser. On the ensuing kick off the crowd through a rock and badly hurt Ahzgaz with a great shot. This left Da Avalanche with eight players against 11 lizards, the balance of power appeared to have swung decisively towards Ludovico Lizards. However, Nuffle had other plans. Both teams went through a series of turnovers, and crucially Alex remained bone headed for 3 turns allowing the orcs the space to make a surge downfield. Ultimately this was the difference maker and Bargoz was able to score the winner with two turns to go. The Lizards had one last chance to tie it up but a skink dropped a hand off mid way through the play bringing the game to an end.
After the game Da Avalanche purchased an apothecary.

The Twerps 0 - 2 Ludovico Lizards

The first game of the season at the famous GJ Stadium was a late night game (televised for the Asian market) which ended around 3am. The Twerps, a human team coached by Bucephulous, suffered a terribly beating at the hands of Anthony_Times' Lizardmen. Alex the koxigor playing an essential role in the win causing two casualties on his own. Knives had an excellent game as well with three completions and a touchdown.
After the match the Ludovico Lizards hired an apothecary, two cheerleaders and an assistant coach.

Chill Masters 1 - 1 Hutta Harda

In the second game of the day the “Chill Masters” entertained the Orc team “Hutta Harda”. The Dark Elves attempted to play the same style against the Orcs that had worked so well against the Chaos Dwarves earlier. However, they were apparently tired after their earlier efforts. The “Chill Masters” completed no passes all game, caused no casualties and scored a single touchdown on their one possession on turn four of the first half. Then the Orcs took over. “Hutta Harda” did indeed start hitting harder. Nargolwing had his game ended right on the stroke of half time by a black orc (#3) and the line elf Doroth was also removed for the game on the opening kick off of the second half by an Orc blitzer (#8). The Orcs rolled their cage up the field and made good progress until Shakare smashed her way into the cage and put got close to the Orc thrower with the ball. This forced “Hutta Harda” to swing their cage to the outside, leaving their ball carrier in the open. Shakare swooped in and knocked the ball free. A huge scrum ensued with five orcs and three elves around the ball. When the ball stopped bouncing the line elf Nargir grabbed it and made a rush for daylight only to be tripped by a line orc. This allowed “Hutta Harda” to reform the cage and roll towards the endzone. The “Chill Masters” had one play left and Shakare took it upon herself to go past a black orc and a blitzer to get to the ball carrier. However when it looked like she might push the ball carrier into the crowd she collapsed to the ground with a pulled hamstring, and could only watch from the mud as the laughing orcs ran in their turn 16 equaliser. After the match the Orcs bought a sneaky goblin to improve their scoring whilst the Dark Elves made out like bandits with their 90,000 gps winnings and hired Morfinil, a new blitzer (using 10,ooo gp they had saved).

Chill Masters 3 - 1 Kiss My Flanks

Two games were played on the Opening day of the OGBL season. The Hot Chilly Chill Masters from the Tower of Chill (a Dark Elf team coached by The Notorious_JTB) played a double header at Centa stadium against the Chaos Dwarves "Kiss my Flanks" (coached by Dwarfrunner) and the Orc team "Hutta Harda" (coached by Cramy).

In their first game of the day the "Chill Masters", playing against "Kiss my Flanks", were inspired by the early death of a chaos dwarf blocker at the hands (or rather knife) of the Assassin Nargolwing, the completion of four early passes, and the injury and ejection of a pair hobgoblins. So it was no surprise when the line elf Nargir scored midway through the first half. However, greed was always an issue for the Dark Elf race and they allowed the nine remaining "Flankers" to equalise before half time as most of the Elves were attempting to chase the ball and get into position to score rather than defend their endzone. The second half was fairly even initially until turn 13, when the Chaos dwarves collapsed. In one turn they had a hobgoblin sent off, lost a Hobgoblin for the next game (courtsey of a block by Nazwaen) and conceded a TD to the majestic witch elf Shakare. "Kiss my Flanks" were shell shocked and down to seven players, they were powerless to prevent Shakare running in to score her second and the "Chill Masters" third to seal the victory. After the game both sides invested their winnings in an apothecary.

OGBL Launched

The Ottawa-Gatineau Bloodbowl collective is starting a new "open League" this fall/winter.

  • The league will be run using the latest Living rule book (LRB5) available to download for free from Games Workshop's specialist games website http://www.specialist-games.com/bloodbowl/rulebook.asp
  • Team creation and advancement will be as the rule book. I.e. you get 1,000,000 GPs to buy your team, it must start with 11 players, and you can chose whether or not to spend money on Fan Factor, rerolls etc.
  • All the inducements, star players and special play cards are available for purchase on a game by game basis. A team may spend "real" GC on an inducement for a particular game if they want but the inducement NEVER becomes a permanent part of the roster.
  • The league will use spiralling expenses as in the rulebook with a break point of 1,750,000 GPs and step size of 150,000 GPs.
League play
  • There is no fixture list and coaches may play as many or as few games as they like subject to the following restrictions.
  • No team may play more than two games per calendar month. Month one is October 2007.
  • Each coach may run as many teams in the league as he/she would like.
  • This means that part time players will not get left too far behind and be discouraged from coming to play after a break. It also allows people with too much time on their hands to play as many games as they want with multiple teams.
  • Additionally, no team may play any other team more than twice until it has played ALL the other teams. This rule is in place to encourage people who are in the league to play as many different folk as possible. This rule only applies for the duration of an "open season" which will be probably less than 6 months.
League Standings
  • There will be numerous standings recorded over the season and the LRB5 match record sheet should be filled in and gotten to someone with access to the spreadsheets for data entry as soon as possible after the game (please).
  • The match record sheet may be downloaded here:http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/LRB5MatchSheet.pdf
  • Standings Categories will include team rankings based on Team Value and Win % along with all the regular TD/CAS categories. Substantial player rankings will be recorded as well.
I look forward to seeing you on the Field!
